Waste Issue
In 2023, Indonesia experienced a critical situation where 30 landfills across the country caught fire. These incidents were primarily attributed to the prevalent practice of handling waste through the open dumping method. This method involves dumping waste in open areas without any systematic approach to containment, management, or environmental protection.
The Impact of Open Dumping Method
Here are some negative impact of open dumping method that we found:
Environmental Pollution: Fires at landfills release harmful pollutants, including toxic gasses, particulate matter, and heavy metals, into the air, contributing to air pollution and climate change.
Public Health Hazards: The smoke from landfill fires poses serious health risks to nearby communities, including respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and other health issues due to prolonged exposure to toxic fumes.
Loss of Biodiversity: Landfill fires can destroy nearby vegetation and wildlife habitats, leading to a loss of biodiversity.
Economic Costs: The costs associated with firefighting, healthcare for affected populations, and environmental remediation are substantial. Additionally, the loss of valuable land due to pollution and degradation impacts local economies.
Project Goals
Qualitative Research
How is waste managed in Indonesia?
We conducted interviews with waste pickup services to explore how waste is managed in Indonesia. In addition, we also took some data samples from the internet that correlated with the results of the interviews we had conducted with waste pickup services.
Quantitative Research
What is user concern about handling waste services?
We used a questionnaire to collect data related to the unrest that people experience when using waste pickup services. From the results of the questionnaire, we concluded several pain points experienced by the community when using waste transportation services.
How Might We Question??
Creating System
The Circular System
We adapt the basic system of 3R waste management (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). In this system, we will manage waste generated by users into a circular system that will reduce the accumulation of waste in the environment.
Applying The System
Applying Circular System into Enviro Features
Waste collected through the Pick Up, Cleaner, GoGreen features will be sorted and collected in our waste bank. Then we deposit the sorted waste to waste processing partners such as recycling craftsmen and compost producers. From the results of the partner's processing, we sell them through the sustainable shop feature in the Enviro application. By implementing this circular system, waste will be managed efficiently and can reduce the accumulation of waste.
Feature #1
Pick Up
Order waste collection services anytime and anywhere.
Feature #2
Cleaner
Home environment cleaning services, family events, and large events.
Feature #3
Lestari Shop
An online store that sells various kinds of processed recycled waste generated from user waste.
Feature #4
GoGreen
A joint environmental cleanup event organized by the app and enviro partners
Lesson Learned
💡 Know more about waste handling in Indonesia
Increase knowledge about waste management in Indonesia. How waste travels after being dumped in the trash and what treatment is done to the waste. And sadly in Indonesia the majority of waste is just thrown away so that it accumulates even until some become mountains.
💡 UX is not about interacting with users but the business environment.
Based on the comments given by the judges, in ux we must honor all those in our project environment, both external and internal. On the one hand we have not thought about how workers pick up waste comfortably, then we improve the flow of waste pickup by giving notes to users to separate their waste that they want to be picked.
🏆 Earned 3rd position
Although it's not the best ranking, we got a lot out of it. Starting from the judges' comments that assessed the gaps in our application to the shortcomings of our application.
